Hearts and Hands for Humanity

Hearts and Hands for Humanity is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization established in Lindon, Utah, and vetted by Beacon of Hope to be a charity where your donated funds can have maximum positive impact.

The mission of Hearts and Hands for Humanity is to transform lives in Eastern Africa by empowering families through sustainable life-saving programs with an emphasis on women and children. Their flagship program for accomplishing this mission is drilling clean water wells, particularly at schools, orphanages, and farms.

Water in Africa is scarce and much of the water is contaiminated. On average a child under age 5 dies every minute from water-related disease. Someone in a family, usually child and teenage girls, must walk mulitple hours a day to fetch water from whatever water source they can find. This means that they are missing school to fetch water and can even be more susceptible to violent crimes as they are out and away from the safe environment of their homes or school. By installing clean water wells at a school that allows young women to go to school in a safe environment and bring clean water home to their familes. Wells may also be installed at a farm to help produce crops for communities in need. Since the wells are drilled deep enough to reach clean water aquifers, that means they are free of contamination and help reduce water-related diseases and child deaths due to water-related disease.

Hearts and Hands for Humanity is generally able to drill a clean water well at 1/4 the cost of wells provided by other charities. They can do this their custom-designed human-powered drill. In addition to drilling clean water wells they also have a variety of humanitarian services for volunteers who can travel to Africa. These include serving primary school lunches, distributing reusable feminine hygiene kits, and caring for orphans.
